One of the many things that will make your trip unforgettable is an experience with the locals. The more immersive your trip is the more memorable it will be. But when you are traveling to a foreign land for the first time, brushing elbows with the locals could be the last thing on your mind. This is especially true if you already have preconceptions based on guides and blogs that you’ve read.
So on the next vacation you plan, make sure to do the following:
1. Book a homestay
Your accommodation may not be as luxurious as expensive suites, but your stay will be quite enjoyable. Nothing says immersing with the local culture than actually living with the locals. Airbnb is where you can find homestays in various parts of the world.
2. Hang out with the locals
Ask if your host would want to hang out with you or give you a tour of places of interest that won’t cost you a dime. With a local to guide you around, you are likely to discover attractions and other establishments that are rarely found in tourism websites or boards. How do you think travel bloggers find cul-de-sac delicious eats, anyway?
3. Feast on local cuisine
What is the point of going on vacation when you still eat or stick with what you are familiar with? As long as your digestion can handle foreign treats, chomp down on local cuisines and make it a point to dine with your host. Home-cooked meals are still the best wherever you are in the world.
4. Travel like the locals
True, car rentals afford you the privacy and convenience that you deserve. But you should try commuting like the locals, even just one time. You are sure to mingle with the locals, and enjoy their confused and, in some cases, rude stares. But that’s all part of being a traveler.
