The magnificent Whitehaven beach stretches for 7 km at the island of Whitsunday, which is accessible by boat from the mainland tourist ports of Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour and the Hamilton island. The beach was awarded the first national award as the cleanest of Queensland in the 2008 competition Keep Australia pure, while in July 2010 the CNN.com highlighted in the top of the list with the most ecological beaches in the world. The beach does not allow pets and smoking is strictly prohibited.
The beautiful beach is famous for its white sand, which consists 98% of pure silica, which gives it a shiny white color. The paradox is that the rocks of the region do not contain this material and the researchers concluded that this sand came in by the currents created by the sea for millions of years.
Unlike regular sand, the Whitehaven beach does not maintain heat from the sun, so it is easy for everyone to enjoy the sand walking barefoot, even on hot days. The sand is very fine and it can damage electronic devices, such as phones and cameras, although it is good for polishing jewelery.
