Isola Liri is a small town in the province of Frosinone which is peaceful and livable as they say. It does not have one of those spectacular historical centers that attracts tourists from all parts of the world but it is unique in its own way. Plus it’s one of the few cases in the world, if not the only, of a city with two waterfalls in the center! Yup you read that correctly. One of them, the youngest, you can see directly from Via Roma, the main street a few steps from Piazza XX Settembre. The largest waterfall with the largest jump, however, is admired by a side adjacent to the same square and is right next to the Castello Boncompagni Viscogliosi, former home of the Dukes of Sora which is unfortunately no longer visited.
You might ask how can a waterfall be within a country. Well, you should know that the river Liri at some point on its path divides into two branches which embrace the first urban nucleus from which it has developed throughout the city . These two branches then get together and at the junction of their waters give rise to the two waterfalls mentioned above. This explains the special mystery about this little town on the water.
We went there at lunch time and when we got hungry we stopped to eat at a pizza restaurant The Corsair. Small, but collected centrally in front of Piazza XX Settembre with a view not only on the square but also on the river Liri. White Pizza with potatoes and fresh sausage is highly recommended at the price of 7 €. You can do it!
