Southern Cross was perhaps my favorite hostel, one of the few where I could have spent many more days in. It is located in Agnes Water, a town famous for the islands of Lady Musgrave and Lady Elliot missed.
The atmosphere is beautiful, relaxed and in perfect Balinese style. The hostel was built by the owners themselves and in the common room where there is the reception, the kitchen and the bar there are photos of the work over the years and the phases the hostel went through.
The rooms are arranged in a bungalow where there are 2, 4 or 6 beds with or without private bathroom. Each has a veranda overlooking the immense garden which surrounds this hostel. It is also one of the few truly clean hostels and in particular the kitchen which is meticulous.
The interesting thing is that the water is collected directly by the rains so there is a very strong attention to the surrounding environment. The staff which is mostly made up of British men, is very courteous and friendly and is always looking for new staff. Finally, the prices normale even for these kind of luxuries and start at $ 25.
