Himara is the largest municipality in the Albanian Riviera and stretches along the Ionian coast at a distance of 18 km from Dhermi. It is a typical area of the Ionian coast with the beach in the lower part of the town and with hills of citrus and olive trees. Known by this name since the fifth century AD it was one of the strongholds of the Albanian patriots against foreign invasions. To escape the repeated attacks of the Turkish, part of the people of Himara took refuge in the mountains of Kurvelesh or emigrated in southern Italy.
Himara participated actively in the Albanian League of Prizren in the nineteenth century. The quality and artistic value of the town’s fortress. Known from the eleventh century as an important commercial center of the Ionian coast in contact with Greece and Italy it was one of the causes of the massive emigration of people to those countries. In the last ten years the phenomenon has become very large.
Himara includes some of the largest beaches of this area. Just like the one of Spilea, the inlet of the same name, one of the most beautiful of the entire coast. They extend between the head of Mesun (Niqifor) to the southeast and the head of Hakise to the north. Going into the sea for about 600 meters to form a horseshoe formed by tectonic subsidence and erosion of the sea. The southeast and northwest coasts are rocky and drop down steeply to 100 meters above the sea. In other places the coast is low and opens onto a large beach with a small harbor for the anchorage of vessels. In the southeast of the beach Spilea flows a powerful source of fresh water. The beach Potam is located in a wonderful place: between rocks that fall oblique in the sea and others that fall vertically. The white sand contrasts with the deep blue waters and green gray slopes. It can be reached by car. Sheltered from the wind you can swim there even in winter. Just before arriving in Himara there is the beach of Livadha.
It is located in the bay of Panormi southeast of Himara between the peninsula and Panorma to Kavadon. A small rocky peninsula that enters the sea. About 300 meters separate the inlet of Panorma into two parts: that of Armeridha and the northwest to southeast Shen Koll. The inlet of Panorma is of tectonic origin identified by the jagged coastline known since ancient times shown in old maps.
