Estoril and Cascais near Lisbon have a long tradition of luxury residential area, one of whose sample is the existence of numerous five star hotels. But the epitome of glamor and tradition have in the Hotel Palácio, which is situated in front of the large garden that opens to the Estoril Casino. When you enter the Hotel Palácio Mr. Afonso opens the door kindly, veteran keeper of this historic establishment where with his 78 years, has been working for 61 years! This is one of the first characteristics, the strong linkage with employees. The history of the Hotel Palácio dates back to 1930 but mostly was forged during the Second World War. Due to the neutrality of Portugal, several royal families were exiled in Estoril.
But likewise the Hotel Palácio was the focus of the attention of British and German spies which was a source of inspiration among novelists and filmmakers. Thus, the Hotel Palácio was featured in the James Bond film On Her Majesty’s service. The real stories starred in the Hotel Palácio are now shown in the so called Royal Gallery which opened in February 2011 where you can see extensive documentation and numerous photographs that bear witness to the many activities of European monarchs in it. Specifically, to the Hotel Palácio have gone Italian, Bulgarian, French, Romanian and of course Spanish royal families. Surely you know that Don Juan de Borbon, father of King Juan Carlos during his exile resided in Estoril. At that time the rooms of the Hotel Palácio had staged meetings and family parties of which you can now see photos in that Real gallery. As a curiosity we comment that the Infanta Pilar de Borbon was married in this hotel.
When you walk through the halls and rooms of the Hotel Palácio you see that the building oozes history. It is a building with classic decor but very elegant and very caring. In any case you have a sense of decay but rather a great combination of classic and modern equipment. The Estoril Hotel Palácio has 161 rooms including 32 suites.
